Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are an increasing concern due to their potential to transform into epidemics and global pandemics. The inherent risks associated with these diseases warrant their classification as biological hazards. About 75% of all the EIDs belong to the category of zoonotic diseases. Most studies primarily focus on the downstream aspects following a disease spillover and its progression into an outbreak. However, there is a significant gap in mitigating the issue by adopting an upstream approach to understand the risk factors contributing to the increased incidence of zoonotic diseases and the possible ways to mitigate it. In this chapter, the urban stressors and its related risk factors that influence the zoonotic spillover risk are identified from the literature review. Based on systems thinking, causal loop diagrams are developed to understand the different pathways of spillover risk in urban environments. The findings indicate that land use changes due to anthropogenic activities act as a major driver that increases contact between humans and zoonotic agents. Nature-based solutions (NBSs) as effective countermeasures to contribute towards mitigating spillover risks are identified as intervention points in the causal loop diagram. NBSs are then categorized based on how they influence the spillover dynamics and various measures are discussed. These solutions address multiple drivers of zoonotic spillover, leading to sustainable urban environments.
