The chapter critically examines the politics around climate denialism, in particular the role of money, political diplomacy and false narratives perpetrated by fossil fuel companies. Climate denialism (rejection of climate science) is a major political and ideological narrative used by fossil fuel companies to slow down the move towards emission reduction and decarbonization for the purpose of protecting their profits. The chapter notes that the methods used by fossil fuel companies include lobbying of lawmakers, political leaders, media and think tanks to promote the dual images of firstly, the falsehood of climate change, and secondly, the ironic image that fossil fuel companies are custodians of the planet. This is in addition to funding university programmes to provide alternative narratives to mainstream climate science as well as a way of building a credible and respectful public profile and sense of community responsibility within the research community and policymaking regime. The chapter also discusses the fact that in recent years, the annual global leaders conference on climate change (COP) has been hosted by petrostates such as United Arab Emirates (COP28) and Azerbaijan (COP29) and these states have used the global platform to engage in greenwashing while carrying out oil and gas deals at the same time. The paper argues that COP has turned into a political theatre of power contestation between the Global North and Global South states in relation to finance and moral responsibility, an arena for fossil fuel lobbying groups to engage in behind the scenes manipulation and a tool by petrostates to serve the interests of their fossil fuel-based economies.

摘要
