Interpretation of a chest X-ray in the early days of training must be through a systematic assessment of all four corners and the centre of an X-ray film. X-rays are a two-dimensional study of a three-dimensional structure. The first step in interpretation is to know what a normal X-ray looks like. Only then can we proceed to recognize abnormalities. The process of interpreting an X-ray is not easy and even the most experienced radiologists stumble and make mistakes. It is also essential to know, that a normal-looking X-ray may still be harbouring abnormality. Hence, it is fair to say that no abnormal finding is visible in the X-ray rather than stating that the X-ray chest is normal, which might be mistaken for the absence of any abnormality in the chest. In this chapter, we will learn how to analyze a chest X-ray.
