The Large Bowel
摘要
The large bowel includes the caecum, the ascending colon, the hepatic flexure, the transverse colon, the splenic flexure, descending colon, the sigmoid, the rectum and the anal canal. It can be affected by several illnesses ranging from infectious disorders to inflammatory and vascular pathologies, granulomatous diseases and malignancies. Diseases of the large bowel are also more common than those affecting the rest of the gastrointestinal tract. Many large intestinal pathologies are visible in the conventional radiograph of the abdomen, barium studies as well as in CT and MRI of the abdomen. Pathological changes affecting the large bowel walls can also be visualized by ultrasonography. This chapter will explore the large bowel using both conventional barium studies as well as images from other modalities to provide the readers with basic information about this very important region of the alimentary tract.
