The history of medical radiology is short. X-rays were discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on the 8th of November 1895. Since that accidental discovery, we have come a long way. Conventional radiography has progressed to digital radiography, dark field radiography and CT scans. Image quality has improved considerably, so much so, that radiology has become an all-important part of medical diagnostics and treatment. In this chapter, the student will be given a brief introduction to the subject. There are several terms used in radiology, which need to be known to the students. Also, while there has been increased use of radiation, there is a growing fear of side effects of radiation exposure. We will briefly touch upon some of the topics which are essential for learning.
