Depolymerization Study on Chitosan Biopolymer Subjected to Shock Wave Impact

The present study is to investigate the depolymerization of the Chitosan (CS) biopolymer upon the shock wave impact by viscosity variations and surface morphological study. The shock wave is created in a vertical shock tube operated with a high-speed pneumatic valve and the CS test specimen is exposed to 50, 100, 150, and 200 shock impulses in a shock tunnel. The CS material is shock treated at a reflected shock (P5) pressure of 323 kPa and a shock Mach number of 1.3 test condition by maintaining the gas supply pressure (P4) of 400 kPa. The CS samples with and without shock treatment are analyzed by viscometer and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) diagnostics. The viscosity result indicates the viscosity reduces significantly as the number of shocks increases from 114 to 61 cP. SEM images indicate that the morphology of fragmented CS microparticles changes implying the depolymerization of the material.
