This chapter, which examines the role of Batanga in the language ecology of the South region of Cameroon, is based on various participatory Journey workshops with members of the Batanga communities and a sociolinguistic survey (Tupper et al. 2024). My conclusion is that Batanga parents are no longer transmitting the language to their children and that French is replacing Batanga in many areas of everyday communication. The rapid decline in intergenerational transmission of Batanga within the last 20 years is a result of factors other than multilingualism, such as urbanization and widespread intermarriage. The decline of Batanga language use and falling speaker numbers challenge local language activists to focus their language development activities on the needs of current speakers. Further research is needed to identify what constitutes Batanga identity, how the Batanga language varieties are changing and how Batanga is used in multilingual discourse.

Multilingualism, Identity, and Language Endangerment among Batanga Communities in Cameroon

  • Katharina Tupper

摘要
