Friction Stir Welding of Polypropylene and Its Tooling: A Review

A contemporary technique for attaching materials without melting them is friction stir welding, or FSW. In recent years, there has been significant advancement in this approach. FSW has been an intriguing topic of research in engineering, as industry increasingly seeks lightweight design solutions. It is a viable replacement for conventional welding techniques as it includes creating heat through friction and causing materials to bend under pressure. The article discusses novel processes for friction stir welding (FSW) of polymers using conventional tooling. These innovative techniques involve preheating the polymer, running the tool through both sides of the material, or employing tools with fixed, heated shoulders. The impacts of tilt angle, pin geometry, welding speed, and tool rotating speed are all mentioned in the paper. New materials, setups, and test criteria for friction stir welding (FSW) are being investigated in ongoing research. This involves looking into the connecting of different materials, which has the potential to lead to new industrial uses for FSW.
