From Waste to Strength: Enhancing Concrete Sustainability with Plastic-Derived Aggregates

The artificial fine aggregate was synthesized from HDPE-type plastic, and it was mixed in the concrete mix in the percentages of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10% by weight of the natural fine aggregate. Several tests were conducted on freshly mixed and hardened concrete. Some samples of concrete, such as 150 mm cubes, 100 × 100 × 500 mm beams, were cast to test the mechanical properties like compressive strength and flexural strength. The test result of compressive strength and flexural strength indicated that: The mix with a 7.5% replacement of artificial fine aggregate (AFA) improved compressive strength by 6.8% and flexural strength by 4.9% compared to natural aggregates. This indicates that using plastic-based artificial aggregates enhances concrete properties and supports sustainability.
