The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Tangkhul Tribe of Manipur

The Tangkhuls can broadly be divided as Raphei, Kharao, Kamo, Kathur and Khaorui. The villages in the North are Raphei, in the west are Kharao, in the east and south are Kamo and the Ukhrul and neighboring southern village are Kathur and the Khaorui’s are those Tangkhul villages under Senapati district of Manipur state. The Tangkhul have their own distinctive festivals and ceremonies, though the villages have different language different boundaries their festivals are somehow related they all celebrated grandly the seed sowing festival, the harvesting festivals, festivals of the youth which differs only by dates and month. The Musical instruments are hardly associated with their songs. Each instruments have their own time and season to play. The villages play the musical instrument according to its season and follows the taboos of playing the musical instrument. The instrument played during ploughing season is not allowed to play during Harvest season. There are several legends, myth and beliefs associated with different villages. Some of the popular myths are associated with the erections of stone monoliths or erection of wood (Tarung Kashun) which signify richness and prosperity. The Tangkhul tribe religion is centered on the belief in supernatural forces and the belief that spirit resides in objects of nature such as stones, mountains, trees etc.
