Flexible Space Solar Panel for UltraFlex Array Using IMM-3J GaAs Solar Cells
摘要
Advanced solar cell and solar array technologies have been demanded to meet escalating power requirements. Lightweight solar arrays which can stow into compact launch volumes are attractive for upcoming missions. Thin film GaInP/GaAs/InGaAs inverted metamorphic triple junction (IMM-3J) solar cells were transferred to 50 μm polyimide film to enhance the power-to-mass ratio. The cells were optimized for 1 MeV electron irradiation fluencies of 1015/cm2, exhibiting an initial efficiency surpassing 31% under the AM0 spectrum and the remaining factor of 85.1% after electron irradiation. The development of high specific power solar panels utilizing the thin film solar cells has been completed. The specific power of the panel, attributable to the cells’ lightweight nature and high efficiency, exceeds 440 W/kg under the AM0 spectrum at beginning of life. Reliability assessments for the panel were conducted, with results affirming its suitability for space environment applications.
