Antimicrobial Resistance in Fish and Fishery Products: An Emerging Threat for Public Health

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a substantial threat to global health without geographic limitations, heightening the risk of complications and hampering the treatment of infections, which can escalate healthcare costs and mortality rates. Antimicrobial overuse in livestock production is a major driver of antimicrobial resistance in human populations. Consequently, it is crucial to monitor the patterns of antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture fish and fishery products, as they pose a potential health hazard by harboring significant pathogenic bacteria that can infect humans, both on their surfaces and internally. Bacterial infections may arise due to improper handling techniques or the consumption of inadequately prepared fish. Various bacterial genera, including Escherichia, Listeria, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, and Salmonella, have been isolated from fish, indicating multisource pollution. Furthermore, most human infections occur through contact with water or other components of the fish’s living environment. The present situation is complex, as fish and fishery products harbor disease-causing and spoilage-inducing microorganisms that possess antibiotic resistances. Using antimicrobials responsibly in aquaculture, with guidance from veterinarians, is crucial for ensuring the safety of aquaculture products. Additionally, adopting alternative approaches like probiotics, phage therapy, antimicrobial peptides, and essential oils is recommended to reduce antimicrobial residues in aquaculture products and address related food safety issues.
