Morphological Study of Machined Surface of AISI-D2 Steel with Various Process Parameters of EDM

Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a procedure that induces erosion on electrically conductive materials, specifically the tool (cathode) and the workpiece (anode) by immersing them in a dielectric fluid. A controlled, repetitive, and irregular electric sparks are generated between the two electrodes to check its effect on workpiece. The objective of this experimental study is to measure the material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (Ra) of electro discharge machined AISI-D2 steel with a copper electrode. Experiments are conducted using design of experiment (DoE) approach i.e. Box- Behnken design matrix of response surface methodology (RSM). Fifteen experiments are conducted with varying current, voltage, and pulse-on time to measure MRR and Ra. The surface tester measures the Ra, whereas the weighing machine measures the MRR. Using the scanning electron images, the surface morphology of machined surfaces is studied.
