Investigation on the Grinding Behavior of AA5128 with a Brazed Diamond Wheel

In this research, the grinding characteristics of AA 5128 were studied, specifically at high-grinding speeds and with a brazed diamond wheel (BDW). Forces applied, ground surface, and brazed wheel wear were all studied in detail. The results showed that a brazed diamond wheel may successfully be used to grind AA5128. Surface features such as smooth regions, pile-up regions, ploughing grooves, adhesive regions, and tiny holes were generated on the surface by excavating ductile material. In addition to reducing the grinding forces and smoothing up the surface, raising the grinding speed also increased the force ratio. This was likely owing to decreased friction among the diamond grains and the work piece. Brazed diamonds on the wheel wore down primarily due to flattening wear. Adhesion of chips was more common on the grains top surface, particularly flattened grains, and in regions with insufficient inter-grain space. This work helps increase the number of fields where brazed diamond wheels can be used.
