Biosafety, Sterilization, and Disinfection Protocols

This chapter presents an in-depth overview of biosafety, sterilization, and disinfection protocols essential for safe and efficient laboratory operations. The discussion below begins by outlining the basis of laboratory safety and good laboratory practices with emphasis on controlled access to laboratory areas, personal protective equipment, and general procedural precautions. Procedures for spill clean-up, waste disposal, and laboratory workspaces free of contamination are reviewed in relation to the control of infection hazards. Discussions on biosafety management include matters related to the design and the facilities of the laboratory with regard to the overall design, including safe and efficient layout, equipment use, and maintenance. It is noted that training programs are important for preparing personnel with knowledge to maintain safety procedures and the safe handling of biohazards. There are particular methodologies for sterilization and disinfection processes that fall into categories, such as treatment of infected infectious materials that should only be used after autoclaving, disinfecting both reusable and disposable items, and methods of sterilization. The disinfecting of reusable articles contaminated by infectious material and proper washing of laboratory glassware that will meet quality control standards will also be covered in the chapter.
