Understanding Social Networks and Community Resilience to Pandemics in Zimbabwe

Many empirical studies considered social networks as an important tool for disaster risk management. However, in Zimbabwe, few studies provided a comprehensive overview of how social networks enhance community resilience to disasters, particularly pandemics. Thus, there are very few studies, conducted regarding the role of social networks in COVID-19 disaster in the country. This research attempt to investigate the role of social networks in enhancing the capacity of the community to bounce forward following the surge of COVID-19 in 2020. The study was conducted in Luveve, Bulawayo. The research employed qualitative methodology to examine the role of social networks. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions via WhatsApp were used as data collection methods. The study established that social networks helped people to gain more information on how to prevent and manage COVID-19, provide social support to the patients, food and medication. The study also found that some people who fell sick were neglected, discriminated, and did not receive any social support from their friends. The study further revealed that social networks play a pivotal role in disasters in disaster risk management but some people with weak ties were neglected. The study recommends that the government put in place systems that enhance social support in communities in this era where COVID-19 is wreaking havoc.
