Research and Application of 3D Seismic in the Characterization and Evaluation of CCS Storage in Brackish Wate

Carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) is currently considered to be the most promising technology for greenhouse gas emission reduction, and it is also one of the key technologies indispensable for China to achieve carbon neutrality and low-carbon utilization of fossil energy. Three-dimensional seismic exploration technology is an effective technical means for site selection and evaluation of carbon sequestration in saline aquifers, delineation of target areas for sequestration, evaluation of sealing properties of roof and floor, and fault sealing. This article analyzes the seismic characterization technology requirements for CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers, and it is difficult to meet the exploration requirements for CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers using conventional oil and gas reservoir seismic exploration technology. Therefore, targeted technical research is urgently needed. Taking a CCS 3D data set in the Ordos Basin as an example, aiming at the requirements of fracture and cap reservoir evaluation in the area, we conducted targeted technical research based on azimuthal anisotropy analysis of physical point layout, high-precision imaging for CO2 sequestration with amplitude preservation, and interpretation based on geophysical characterization of CO2 sequestration. We formed a 3D seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation technology and process based on CO2 sequestration target bodies in the Ordos Basin, and obtained good application results through field research and testing.
