Application of Air Drilling Technology in HDR Wells in Qinghai Gonghe Area in China

Qinghai Province has abundant geothermal resources, and high-temperature dry hot rock masses with a temperature of 214 ℃ were discovered during geothermal exploration, which has high potential for development and utilization. Due to the high hardness, poor drillability, low mechanical drilling speed, and long drilling cycle of the lower Triassic granite formation in the Gonghe Basin of Qinghai, the exploration and development process of the dry hot rock has been severely restricted. In order to improve drilling speed and shorten drilling cycle, air drilling tests were conducted in the 1508–2256 m section of the GH-01 well in Qinghai Dry Hot Rock. This article provides a detailed introduction to the construction of Qinghai Gonghe dry hot rock air drilling and evaluates the effectiveness of air drilling. The test results show that although there are problems with the short service life of the air hammer head, the failure of the air hammer check valve seal caused by a large amount of water in the formation, the formation of a cushion layer due to rock debris becoming wet, which leads to increased wellbore inclination, and multiple complex underground situations in air drilling, air drilling in granite formations can significantly improve drilling speed. It has great advantages in speed up and is an effective means to improve hard rock drilling speed. It can achieve the goal of accelerating the development of dry hot rock and can be promoted and applied in dry hot rock drilling.
