Role of Neglected Crops Under Multi-stress Conditions

Neglected crops, which are generally not focused on the current and commercialized form of agriculture, have the potential to offer solutions to issues related to food security and malnutrition as well as sustainable farming. The study aims to identify the needs, opportunities, and potential hindrances of these crops based on the contribution they make in supporting efforts toward the improvement of biodiversity, soil health, efficient use of natural resources, and combating the effects of climate change. Neglected crops are important because of their ability to greatly contribute to genetic variation and crop differentiation, which are important considerations in maintaining crop sustainability and minimizing crop loss. They help to restore physical properties, nutrient dynamics, and levels of organic matter in the soil, which promotes healthier and sustainable soil. Moreover, these crops have low water demand and require other inputs, making them useful for producing crops in arid regions and leading to low inputs for the agriculture industry. Neglected crops, on the other hand, are associated with some constraints, such as a lack of investment in research and development, weak market structures, low consumer demand and awareness, and insufficient policy responses. Climate change is also a limitation that affects their output and ability to adapt to the new climatic conditions. Thus, there is a great potential for neglected crops to gain attention through increased research on such crops, a better marketing framework, improved policies, and consumer awareness. For future directions and recommendations, it is recommended to focus on the improvement of genetics through various breeding processes, better and improved farming technologies, markets, improved and better products, consumer awareness, and research and knowledge exchange all over the world. In this way, it will be possible to incorporate these overlooked crops back into the agricultural system, which will help diversify diets, provide better standards of living, and develop more sustainable food chains.
