This chapter evaluates Battery Park City in New York, a government-led mixed-use megaproject aimed at revitalizing Lower Manhattan as a mixed-use economic centre during a period of economic decline. Battery Park City is characterized by a clear vision for urban form and character, drawing inspiration from local patterns. It provides public benefits onsite through the creation of new waterfront open spaces, recreational facilities, and several public schools, while also generating substantial revenue to support city services and affordable housing in other areas of the city. Battery Park City represents a rejection of modernist planning principles, favouring more contextual urban design approaches, to become a postmodern benchmark for new developments in the United States and around the world.
