This chapter introduces the process of iron ore sintering within the context of the iron and steelmaking industry and demonstrates the importance of this process. Also, this chapter describes the aims and goals of the book and its relevance with a particular focus on iron ore sintering, its processing, and prospects for technological development. The chapter explains how blast furnace consumption requires more operations from the sinter plants and this in turn influences the steelmaking productivity and quality. Additionally, the chapter describes a history of the development of sintering technologies giving information on how it was developed from the earliest forms to its modern enhanced techniques. Many of the new readers will be unfamiliar with some of the words and ideas that are used in this section such as sinter feed as part of a blend, the sintering procedure, and features related to good quality sinter. This introductory chapter sets the stage for readers and prepares them for later in-depth arguments and discussions found in the succeeding chapters.
