Using AI to Assist Humanitarian Efforts: Possibilities and Hazards
摘要
In today’s technological era, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool across various sectors, including philanthropy and humanitarian work. AI’s potential to enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities in need is profound, particularly by improving the efficiency and reach of charitable and humanitarian organizations. This chapter reviews the literature on AI and its applications in humanitarian and voluntary work, highlighting its increasing prominence in discussions about enhancing humanitarian efforts. It has become one of the vital topics present in all discussions of humanitarian work, as it is a tool with high capabilities that can alleviate the suffering of people in emergency situations, risks, and disasters. The study draws on a range of sources, including the Web of Science database, published articles, and reports from NGOs, to extract insights on AI’s role in the humanitarian context. The literature reveals several key implications for AI’s future in this field, such as enhancing the effectiveness of humanitarian actions, optimizing donation and fundraising processes, improving resource allocation, enabling impactful communication, and customizing NGOs’ responses to better serve target populations. However, the review also identifies growing concerns surrounding AI use, including potential discrimination, persecution of vulnerable populations, and issues related to privacy and data protection. This chapter concludes with practical guidelines and implications for integrating AI into humanitarian work.
