Cancer continues to be a prominent cause of mortality worldwide driving continuous research efforts to develop effective anticancer drugs. Natural compounds have emerged as potential sources of anticancer agents demonstrating cytotoxicity against diverse cancer cell lines and making them promising candidates for drug development. With over 60% of contemporary anticancer drugs having roots in natural sources, the exploration of plant and microbial species is guided by considerations such as composition, ecology, phytochemical properties, and ethno pharmacology. Furthermore, studies have revealed the anticancer activity of flavonoids, anthocyanins, and other phytochemicals found in plants. These compounds demonstrate the ability to regulate epigenetic changes, inhibit metastasis, disrupt cell cycle progression, interfere with cell signal transduction, and promote apoptosis in cancer cells. Additionally, natural compounds have been shown to have chemo preventive abilities, mitigating the risk of cancer development. Because of the great potential of natural compounds as anticancer agents, there is a lot of interest in the field of drug development, with researchers looking into these compounds as prospective sources of safe, effective, and affordable anticancer medications. Vincristine, vinblastine, and Taxol are successful examples that demonstrate the prospective trajectory of natural substances in developing novel and enhanced anticancer medicines to meet the rising rates of cancer mortality.
