Metabolic syndrome (MetS) presents itself as a clinical manifestation marked by a range of coexisting conditions, which include, but are not limited to, obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and/or hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, as well as pro- inflammatory and pro-thrombotic states. All of these comorbidities collectively contribute to the development of a low-grade inflammatory state and oxidative stress, characteristic of MetS. These metabolic disorders stand as primary contributors to global morbidity and mortality, steadily increasing in prevalence and imposing significant burdens on both human health and healthcare costs. The clinical management of MetS often necessitates a polypharmaceutical approach; however, this may lead to undesirable side effects and compromise patient compliance. Consequently, there is a growing emphasis on exploring the potential of natural products derived from plants, marine organisms, and various microorganisms for their positive impacts in addressing chronic metabolic diseases and associated complications. Urgently needed is a valid and alternative natural therapeutic strategy, devoid of side effects, that could serve as a valuable tool in the battle against MetS. This chapter delves into the potential beneficial role of natural bioactive compounds in both the prevention and clinical management of MetS and its accompanying comorbidities.
