Social enterprise has been increasingly acknowledged as a new organizational model to address social and environmental issues and thus promote sustainability around the world. Broadly defined, social enterprises are organizations that pursue a social mission through commercial activities. Being the most recent forms of organization, they often lack legitimacy and resources to succeed at significant scale. For social enterprises to scale up, an enabling environment that includes appropriate funding, new legal forms, and the assimilation of the values associated to this organizational model is necessary. In Vietnam, several local and international organizations have sought to create such an environment for social enterprise development. As a result, social enterprise has been recently recognized in the Enterprise Law 2014. This chapter examines the activities of the first organizations that aim at promoting the diffusion and development of social enterprises in the country.
