Social work students often express surprise when discovering that they need to learn about the mechanisms of the political system and are unsure of how the political processes of where they practice influence their work. Many are disengaged from politics, particularly due to the frequent media portrayal of political figures—predominantly men—often falling short of public expectations. Despite their misgivings, politics do shape government policy and funding, so knowing how the political system works is particularly important for disciplines that have an advocacy, human rights or social justice focus. The tutorial activity described in this chapter is located within a course that explores political processes, citizenship and how social policy impacts upon the funding and delivery of human services. This activity provides students with a practical understanding of the proportional voting process.
