Students can find it hard to see the connections between the theory and the practice. This activity makes the link between these abstract ideas and real life, giving students a taste of how theory can inform their developing social work practice. We have used the activity described in this chapter to highlight the use of theory in understanding a client’s situation, developing intervention plans and demonstrating critical reflection in action. It is also an excellent activity by which to compare the effect of different theoretical perspectives. By choosing a particular theoretical frame and then role-playing a conversation between a worker and client students are quickly able to grasp how theory informs practice. As the conversation unfolds, they witness the choices a practitioner makes, are invited to contribute to the process, and hear reflective practice in action.
