It is often challenging to provide social work students with the conceptual and analytical tools they need for complex practice that will be conducted within powerful institutions. Conversely, it can be equally challenging for social work students to “walk in the shoes” of service users. While theoretical tools can seem remote from “the real world”, almost every student has access to, and experience with, taking photographs on a mobile phone. In this chapter, we describe the ways we have used aspects of the “photovoice” method in our social work teaching and provide suggestions for using student-created images from tutorials and workshops in assessment and vice versa.
