Dick and Cathy’s Legacy: From the Viewpoint of an Urban Planning Scholar
摘要
Upon receiving the news of the passing of Professors Dick Duke and Cathy Greenblat, I began to ponder what their legacy might have been. I was in the period of self-formation of academician in urban planning at Tokyo Institute of Technology from the early 1980s to the early 1990s, so I was stimulated by their researches and had personal exchanges with both of them. In this chapter, I trace my personal memories of Dick and Cathy and revisit their gaming study classics, especially their Reader, Gaming-Simulation: Rationale Applications (1975). I also review Rhyne’s article, Meier and Duke’s paper, Early METRO, a prototype of hybrid games, and IMPASSE? a frame game, two community planning games, and their influence on the subsequent development of hybrid games in Japan. As a result, I have come to a vague conclusion, namely, that what Dick and Cathy left is model and vehicle.
