The internal fragmentation of Islamic political parties is not a new phenomenon in Indonesia’s political history. The earliest party division could be traced back to the Islamic Association (Sarekat Islam/SI), originally a trading organization named the Islamic Commerce Association (Sarekat Dagang Islam/SDI). SDI was founded in 1905 by Samanhoedi, a Muslim businessman, in the pursuit of consolidating the interests of indigenous entrepreneurs, but it later became the first political channel for the people’s aspirations.
