Comparison of Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles in Multi-unit Residential Buildings in Spain

The increasing adoption of Electric Vehicles (EV) and the transition towards sustainable transportation have necessitated the development of robust EV charging infrastructure, particularly in Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURB) within the context of cities. This transition poses unique challenges due to the complex dynamics of shared residential spaces and the need for regulatory compliance. This study explores the techno-economic aspects of implementing EV charging systems in MURB, analyzing both collective and individualized metering approaches. Through a case study, the energy demands and state of charge patterns are evaluated, alongside the infrastructure’s capacity to support these needs. A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis is conducted, assessing the impact on the user’s bill and the consequences of considering different charging schemes. The findings highlight the importance of aligning building power management strategies with regulatory guidelines, particularly ITC-BT-52, to optimize energy use and ensure compliance. The results demonstrate that strategic implementation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure not only supports the energy transition but also offers significant cost savings and operational efficiencies for MURBs.
