The life of a flexible pavement depends basically on its flexural strength. Usually, except in cases of sub-grade failure, flexural fatigue and also natural aging may cause cracks to develop and propagate within a flexible pavement. Such cracks along with other factors including poor workmanship, water stagnation on riding surface of bituminous road, repetitive dynamic vehicular loads, etc. cause development of potholes. Mastic asphalt overlay as wearing course has been found to be quite effective to overcome such problems, but the cost factor of the treatment leaves room for reservation in its widespread application. Interestingly, crack propagation and potholes can be stalled by interposing a suitable fabric in combination within the existing pavement. Properly designed Jute Geotextile (JGT) with specific tensile strength and due to its unique technical features including high thermal compatibility with bitumen has been used to act as the interposing fabric to prevent cracks and potholes from getting propagated in two roads in West Bengal and some other roads in Uttar Pradesh. Performance of such roads treated with JGT was found to be highly encouraging. In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the process of crack formation and discuss the remedial concept with Jute Geotextile on the basis of findings out of the field applications undertaken in two different states.
