Countering Greyhole Attack in Opportunistic Networks Using a Reporting and Patrolling Model

In Opportunistic Networks (OppNet), the transmission of messages takes place by opportunistic connection between nodes, which provides several benefits when compared to centralized networks. However malicious attacks in OppNets can decrease network performance rendering OppNets unreliable and unusable. Two most common types of malicious attacks on the network are blackhole and greyhole attacks. In this work, we have proposed a novel algorithm called Reporting and Patrolling Mechanism (RPM) which uses the idea of introducing police nodes to identify malicious nodes. Along with this, a trust function is used in our model to detect malicious nodes dynamically. In this paper, RPM has been applied and simulated the network using Epidemic and PRoPHET Routing Protocols. Our algorithm shows a significant increase in the delivery ratio of the network (an average of 7.52%) and significant decrease in overhead ratio (30%) and number of messages dropped (20%) in the presence of greyhole nodes in the network.
