Secondary agriculture can be sustained only when the required quantum and type of bioresources that the specific enterprises need are met. The farms should be able to ensure the availability of such feedstock in a hassle-free manner. This is linked to the ability of the farms to generate marketable surpluses of various commodities. This indicates the importance of adopting a value chain approach to agricultural practices. Presently, the production practices are segmented, whereby the farmers to not get advice from the extension agencies for an efficient and ecosystem-oriented agricultural system. The production and post-production segments of the value chain are considered in practice as mutually exclusive, while they should be treated as a continuum. To promote this concept, this chapter takes up two important extension services relating to production and post-production, namely agricultural extension and agricultural marketing. Furthermore, the chapter suggests the integration of both these services as value chain extension services in promoting secondary agriculture and micro-enterprises, particularly. Thereafter, it deliberates upon the challenges and the solutions to promoting value chain-led extension services.

摘要
