This chapter contains the background that explains why the COVID-19 pandemic should be seen beyond the health problems. In this chapter, Putri et al. reveal the importance of gaining better understanding about the COVID-19 pandemic through a sociodemographic perspective and illustrate the reasons why the indigenous people are considered to be a vulnerable group that is at higher risk of exposure to the pandemic. However, we also question whether indigenous peoples are the most vulnerable groups or resilient in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. The second subtitle describes the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on indigenous people from previous studies, especially related to demographics such as mobility patterns, fertility rates, mortality rates, and livelihood. Besides the vulnerabilities and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic that are understood from sociodemographic perspectives, this chapter also represents how indigenous peoples perceive, respond, and adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Putri et al. explain the data source and locus of indigenous people where we researched and provide detailed information regarding indigenous people who are learned in our research.

This chapter contains the background that explains why the COVID-19 pandemic should be seen beyond the health problems. In this chapter, Putri et al. reveal the importance of gaining better understanding about the COVID-19 pandemic through a sociodemographic perspective and illustrate the reasons why the indigenous people are considered to be a vulnerable group that is at higher risk of exposure to the pandemic.
