Trust has been a taken-for-granted phenomenon both in our everyday lives and in social science research, particularly till the point it is broken. In contemporary times, forces of political polarisation, economic inequality, technological advancements, and globalisation among others have contributed to a decline in trust across multiple domains of personal and social lives. In the current chapter, the construct of trust has been examined from a philosophical and psychological standpoint using Western and Indian Knowledge Systems and its application and relevance to Indian Education with a special emphasis on trust violations and repair. While the philosophical discourse provides insights into why and how we trust, focusing on moral dimensions of trust, psychological literature provides insight into the dispositional, cognitive, affective and behavioural aspects of trust particularly in interpersonal relationships. In Indian thought, trust has been linked to spiritual growth, self-realisation and harmonious societal functioning. Using a systems perspective, the role of trust, potential reasons and influence of trust violations are traced. The chapter concludes with insights into strategies of trust repair in educational institutions and how the insights from Indian thought can be useful in developing a positive learning environment.

摘要
