India shares a long history of socio-economic and trade relationships with Myanmar. Since the colonial period, people of Indian origin have resided in Myanmar for work and business purposes. There has been a unique history of Indian migration to Myanmar since the nineteenth century. Myanmar has been one of the important South East Asian countries for people of Indian origin. The size of the Indian community in Myanmar constitutes around 4 per cent of the total population of the country. The Indian community has impacted the socio-cultural and economic connections between India and Myanmar. This paper aims to study the existing literature on Indians in Myanmar and the circumstances that led to their migration. By analysing the scholarly works, published reports, news articles and other related secondary literature, the paper articulates the history and contemporary situations of the people of Indian origin in Myanmar. This paper addresses the problems faced by PIOs in Myanmar and the causes of their stay back or return to India. It also analyses the current trends of migration from India to Myanmar and the implications of existing diaspora policies.
