Migration from India to the Unites States is not a new phenomenon. Coming in waves, different groups of migrants have arrived on the US shores: both skilled and unskilled. Seen as a land of opportunity, the United States holds a unique promise for Indian nationals, and it is not surprising to see Indians representing the second largest US immigrant group today, after Mexicans and ahead of Chinese and Filipinos. However, this immigrant group has also been impacted by political and health crises in the post-COVID era. The migration for jobs, education, and family reunions have all been impacted. Additionally, an unsettling trend weaving India intricately into the narrative of illegal immigration at the US southern border has also emerged. This paper traces the impact of political change and COVID-19 on recent immigration trends from India to the United States in both legal and illegal movements with important policy implications for both the sending and receiving country.
