Over the past decade, there has been a growing utilization of human factors and ergonomics (HFE) methodologies in various healthcare professions and scenarios. Workers in healthcare professions who are responsible for the lifting and movement of patients as a fundamental aspect of their duties experience a significantly elevated incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD). This review paper presents the concept of human factors and ergonomics, introducing it as a significant field within medical and healthcare services. The paper examines prevailing patterns that could potentially elevate the risk of WRMSD among healthcare workers. Additionally, it provides a summary of key ergonomic design principles outlined in standards, which aim to alleviate these issues. The paper identifies future opportunities for the development and integration of systems with the consideration of HFE within healthcare applications. Paper concludes that consideration of HFE can make valuable contributions to healthcare system and design initiatives aimed at enhancing the everyday performance and safety for healthcare workers.
