The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a popular symmetric encryption technology noted for its robust security and efficient implementation. It does several transformations, including SubBytes, ShiftRows, MixColumns, and AddRoundKey, on data using a \(4\times 4\) grid of bytes. Both row-based and column-based processing are used to complete these tasks. The avalanche effect, a crucial component of AES, makes sure that even little changes to the input cause notable changes to the output, enhancing security. This paper presents a thorough examination of the avalanche effect in AES, focusing on the comparison between row-based and column-based processing. We investigate how these distinct processing techniques influence the strength of the avalanche effect and their implications for the overall security of AES. Our research involves methodical testing and assessment to measure the impact of the avalanche effect under various scenarios and input conditions. Through empirical data and evaluation, we provide insights into the effectiveness of row-based and column-based processing in maintaining a strong avalanche effect. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of AES’s cryptographic properties and offer valuable perspectives for the design and implementation of cryptographic algorithms. This study underscores the flexibility of AES encryption and its ability to maintain robust security regardless of the processing method employed.

摘要
