The past two years have seen a growth in interest surrounding generative artificial intelligence. This paper conducts a bibliometric study of academic publications to describe the field’s evolution and current state. The analysis examines 13,458 documents sourced from the Scopus database. A descriptive review of the dataset highlights the key authors and influential works within the domain. Analysis of the main research topics, industry coverage, and studies of the challenges posed by generative AI technologies reveals potential avenues for future research.
