Functional Metagenomics of Avicennia marina Root-Associated Microbiomes

Mangroves are unique, and endangered, coastal ecosystems that play a vital role in the tropical and subtropical environments. A comprehensive description of the microbial communities in these ecosystems is currently lacking, and additional studies are required to have a complete understanding of the functioning and persistence of mangroves worldwide. Avicennia marina, also known as a gray mangrove, grows in multiple areas across the globe. It is known for its particularly pronounced tolerance to extreme and harsh environmental conditions, such as salinity, aridity, water temperatures, and frost frequency. Metagenomics has provided new insights into the microbial communities that associate with A. marina roots, revealing the functional capabilities of these microbes and their crucial role in plant growth, nutrient acquisition, stress tolerance, and environmental resilience. In this chapter, we discussed about the complete analysis of the functional roles of root-associated microbial communities in A. marina, based on recent metagenomic studies. Microbial functions such as nitrogen fixation, phosphorus solubilization, organic matter degradation, and heavy metal detoxification help promote plant growth and improve soil fertility.
