An Empirical Study of Risk Management Practices in Software Startups

Software startups are engaged in activities that carry significant risks, both in business operations and product development. Recognizing and efficiently managing these risks is crucial for their survival and potential successes. Despite numerous studies on the factors leading to the failure or success of software startups, empirical research focusing on risk management within this context is rather limited. This study aims to explore the processes through which startups identify, manage, and mitigate various risks throughout the development of their software products. Additionally, it examines potential discrepancies between the risks startups face and their strategies for managing these risks. We conducted a survey comprising 72 questions, gathering insights from 89 software startups globally. Our research highlights the primary risks associated with team dynamics, methodologies, and product development at different startup stages. Our findings indicate that perceived risk exposures decrease as startups progress from early to later stages. Additionally, no significant differences were observed in risk management approaches across the various startup stages. Startups predominantly employ team-based, informal, and unstructured approaches for risk identification, analysis, and mitigation. Product-related risks are of utmost concern, and the frequency of product risk management activities is directly linked to product satisfaction levels. These insights offer practical and useful guidance for startup founders and project managers on effectively navigating risks in software startup environments.
