The growth of online education and training, catering to the demand for flexible and remote learning opportunities, has used technological advancements to deliver education materials and interactive experiences. Despite its proliferation, distance learning faces criticisms due to the lack of students’ cognitive engagement as effectively as traditional face-to-face (f2f) learning methods. Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) technology emerges as a revolutionary tool in online construction management training, offering an engaging, experiential learning environment that transcends geographical limitations. The Design and Development Research (DDR) methodology to create and evaluate an IVR application for construction management education was used in this study, focusing on human-centred design and experiential learning. The application integrates head-mounted displays (HMDs) and mobile VR to facilitate independent, at-home learning. Our findings indicate a positive reception from users, evidenced by high comfort and satisfaction ratings. The IVR system was found to be user-friendly and effective in aiding participants with their training tasks, despite a learning curve for some initially. The application’s intuitiveness and reliability were affirmed, and the desire for additional activities implies engagement and potential for further development. This research concludes that when thoughtfully implemented and aligned with pedagogical goals, IVR can significantly enhance online learning experiences, particularly in construction training environments that require complex spatial and procedural understanding.
