Cross-Disciplinary Scenario Planning for Digitalisation in Project and Building Lifecycle

Future visions of digitalisation in the built environment are often based on the promise of positive and transformative changes that technologies such as digital twins and artificial intelligence (AI) can bring to the industry. However, these visions in their realisation and the technologies in their implementation are often hindered by siloed approaches, and a lack of lifecycle thinking. This creates a gap in understanding the real needs of the stakeholders in the collaborative processes of projects as well as the expectations from digital models in their development and use for building operations and management. This paper aims to explore the preferred scenarios for shaping the future of digitalisation in the built environment and in particular for facility management through a lifecycle perspective. For this purpose, two workshops have been conducted with participants from academia and the industry as part of a Norwegian Research Council-funded project on the use of digital twins for building operation and management. This paper is based on the results of the first workshop on forecasting the future of digitalisation with a focus on understanding facility managers’ needs for technologies’ use and integration in their work. This was later complemented with a backcasting workshop through imagining the preferred future of digitalisation at the project level from design and construction towards the operation phase. The results of the workshops are scenarios that demonstrate cross-disciplinary visions of digitalisation based on technological, people, process and organisational considerations. This work builds on the need for collaboration within the industry to shape sustainable digitalisation strategies for the future.
