A critical aspect often overlooked in achieving construction project success is the management of materials on construction sites. Poor material inventory and procurement handling, among others, severely impact the project's success. This study explores the challenges of material management on construction project performance. A quantitative approach was adopted to achieve this, and a well-structured questionnaire was distributed to construction industry professionals. A total of 70 data sets were considered for analysis after data collection. The results identified and ranked the challenges under seven headings: ‘Material Schedule’, ‘Material Scheduling’, ‘Material Control’, ‘Material Handling’, ‘Material Storage’ and ‘Material Wastages’. Construction project success is heavily dependent on the efficient management of materials and the lack of appropriate material management can adversely impact successful project delivery.
