Streamlining Construction Project Logistics in Developing Nations: Making a Case for Blockchain Technology Adoption

The absence of supplies and resources at construction sites, when required, can significantly hinder project development and have knock-on effects on other construction-related operations. This study examines the benefits of adopting blockchain technology in construction logistics operations. This is done to make a case for blockchain technology adoption in construction project logistics in developing nations. The study utilised a survey design. 152 questionnaires were distributed, and 104 were returned and considered appropriate for the study. The data analysis involved various statistical methods, including percentages, mean item scores, standard deviation, one-sample t-tests, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results indicate that the main benefits of adopting blockchain technology in construction logistics operations are reduced systemic risk, counterfeit materials identification, business process acceleration and efficiency, new business model enablement, application rationalisation and redundancy, facilitate SME financing, fraud reduction, enable visibility, facilitate origin tracking of materials, and reduced transaction cost. This study, therefore, strongly recommends exploring implementing blockchain solutions by construction organisations in developing nations to streamline project logistics and unlock the benefits identified in this study.
