Research on Lighting Preferences and Their Impacts on E-sports Activities of Resident College Students

With the growing popularity of E-sports activities among college students, the lighting requirements in shared dormitory spaces have become increasingly complex. This study investigates whether gaming students adjust their lighting preferences according to the living habits and needs of their non-gaming roommates, thus deviating from their preferred lighting environment. Through a questionnaire survey, the study analyzed the lighting usage habits of students with different backgrounds and gaming habits in dormitory environments and how they coordinated with their roommates. The results show that both gamers and non-gaming roommates have similar lighting preferences during both the day and night. During the day, the similarity in lighting needs for various activities and the supplementation of natural light as indoor lighting minimizes conflicts among resident students. At night, many gamers adjust their lighting to accommodate their roommates’ needs, leading to deviation from their preferred E-sports lighting environment. However, high-frequency changes in light from gaming screens still negatively affect non-gaming roommates’ satisfaction with the dormitory lighting environment, providing valuable insights for the design and management of lighting environments in shared spaces such as college dormitories.
