This chapter reviews the status of laws in countries around the world criminalizing suicide and attempted suicide and efforts to change these laws. The trend is for suicidal behavior to be decriminalized. The impact of laws and government regulations concerning the methods used by those dying by suicide is reviewed and found, in many instances, to reduce the use of those methods for suicide and, sometimes, to reduce the total suicide rate by all methods, for example, restricting access to firearms and switching domestic gas from coal gas to natural gas.

摘要

This chapter reviews the status of laws in countries around the world criminalizing suicide and attempted suicide and efforts to change these laws. The trend is for suicidal behavior to be decriminalized. The impact of laws and government regulations concerning the methods used by those dying by suicide is reviewed and found, in many instances, to reduce the use of those methods for suicide and, sometimes, to reduce the total suicide rate by all methods, for example, restricting access to firearms and switching domestic gas from coal gas to natural gas.
