As a result of growing industrial activity and ensuing environmental contamination, managing heavy metals in water bodies has gained significant importance. Once saturated and considered spent traditional ion exchangers provide disposal issues as well as environmental dangers. In order to solve these problems, this chapter offers a sustainable method for turning used spent ion exchangers into useful sorbents. The physicochemical characteristics of spent ion exchangers, their regeneration processes, and the chemical alterations that maximize their sorbent performance are all covered in this chapter. Additionally, it looks at the kinetics, isotherms, and adsorption mechanisms related to using these modified sorbents to remove heavy metals. The chapter emphasizes how waste materials can be converted into useful sorbents, which has two positive environmental effects: it reduces solid waste and mitigates heavy metal contamination. This chapter offers a thorough overview of a cutting-edge, environmentally friendly heavy metal removal technique that makes a substantial contribution to resource management and environmental protection.
